Save a Life, No to Dengue Drive

photo from google.com
For several months, the disease known as Dengue hit a huge number of people in the country. A lot of areas were declared on OUTBREAK and hospitals were flooded with victims of the disease.

What is this disease called dengue anyway?

Dengue, also known as the breakbone fever, is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. If not treated early, the disease develops into a life threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome. Dengue shock syndrome is a stage where dangerously low blood pressure occurs, if not treated could result to death.

A few of us in Clay Friends Society Philippines were also hit by this disease... But with family's support and the means to be treated in one of the best hospitals in the country, all recovered well and fast.

Sadly it's not the same as with what is happening in the country. The number of people, mostly children, confined in public hospitals as well as the death rate caused by the disease continued to rise due to lack of money and medications...

You see the ratio of children to a bed? Yes, two to four children share a bed. That's how uncomfortable it is in public hospitals :-(

This is the reason our group, The Clay Friends Society Philippines, decided to start a fundraising drive last August to be able to help and support Quirino Memorial Medical Center. Why QMMC? We have chosen this hospital because they are one of the biggest public hospitals who are catering to a huge number of children with dengue. When I called them, they have a total of 200+ children currently confined in their hospital. By providing them with medicines and medical supplies needed to fight the disease we can help these children in their battle to conquer dengue.

The fundraising ran for a couple of weeks... Thank God for generous friends because in that short amount of time, we were able to raise a total of P8011.00 which was used to buy medicines and medical supplies, together with the donated boxes of distilled waters, which was then brought to QMMC.

Good thing nurse Cherry was with us... Otherwise we would have ended up clueless which meds to get!

We were able to get this much medicines and supplies for the kids...

And on September 9, 2011, we set to deliver everything!

trunk full of stuff

The hospital director, Dra Reyes, together with the assistant director gave us a warm welcome and introduced us to their office folks and to the head doctors of the Dengue Pedia Ward.

Who toured us to where the dengue patients are...

I'd say that the fundraising which aimed to help the less fortunate was a success... What made it a success was the people who gathered together, both physical and online, to donate in anyway they can to be able to save as much lives as we possibly can. For me, nothing can ever beat the love given by these people.

Indeed, nothing compares to the happiness brought by a smile from a kids face.
And nothing can be more satisfying than the feeling of being able to share blessings from God.

"Small amounts when put together can make a BIG difference". ♥

{Names of the people who donated will be posted here soon. Our little way of saying thank you for supporting the drive ☺}

Your quote about "Small amounts when put together can make a BIG difference." is very true. Let us all help one another to prevent the virus. Visit www.greatmoms.net for more information to fight against Dengue.
